Analysis
Why did Israel attack Syria now, and why did the Syrians admit it?
The alleged Israeli attack came one day after an Iranian announcement that Tehran will view any attack on Syrian territory as an attack against Iran itself.

Palestinians discover the strength of soft power
The Palestinians built a new tent city Friday, a tactic likely to win them much more sympathy than clashing with the IDF at the border or committing clear acts of terror.

Hamas leader Khaled Meshal, right
After latest Israel-Gaza conflict, Hamas has gained major political strength
Hundreds of thousands of people came out to mark Hamas' anniversary, celebrated 'victory' over Israel in Pillar of Defense and, above all, to see in person the man who has marked his path to the presidency of Palestine some day: Khaled Meshal.

Palestinian school girls look at a destroyed building
In keeping Gaza truce with Israel, Hamas shows it has much more to lose
Unlike in previous cease-fires, this time Hamas was quick to rein in small factions in the Gaza Strip, and handled an incident near the border fence with Israel differently than it would have in the past.

Until Israel and Hamas meet again
None of Israel's political or military leaders imagines that this week's confrontation with Hamas will be the last. But it did buy both sides vital time to prepare for future rounds.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, left, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, center, and Netanyahu
Who won this round in Gaza, Israel or Hamas? Only time will tell
The true outcome of Operation Pillar of Defense will be clear in time: if there is quiet, the Netanyahu government can claim success, but if there isn't, the next military operation against Hamas will be with much greater force.

Neither Israel nor Hamas thinks a truce would last forever
The hope is for a couple of years of quiet, diplomats said Tuesday night. To the people on the ground, that sounds a bit optimistic.

Massing troops prepare for battle.
Israel doesn't want to topple Hamas, just rein it in
If the major forces of Sunni Islam in the region act as responsible adults, there is still a chance that Gaza will not see a reprise of Operation Cast Lead, an experience whose scars Gaza Strip residents still bear four years later.

Will Israel invade the Gaza Strip?
As Israel attempts to force Hamas into a full ceasefire, it can expect the situation to become increasingly complex.

After Egypt's diplomacy falters, Israel must decide whether to launch ground offensive
Despite the blunt statements, Cairo doesn't want a direct or indirect military conflict with Israel, not even if the fighting between Hamas and Israel continues.

About this blog
Since my last post with Avi Issacharoff in the MESS Report blog last year, the Middle East has changed immensely. In the wake of the Arab Spring, a new political reality has emerged in the region, one that affects each country individually and has enormous implications on Israel, as well. The two of us have been covering the Middle East, with a focus on politics and security, for more than a decade. Wars have hit, terrorists have struck, peace initiatives have been signed (and often forgotten) and governments have changed hands. The Middle East is a volatile region. To narrow analysis down to one viewpoint is impossible, but to try to find a balance in perspectives is, no matter how often opinions seems to contradict. In this blog, I aim to engage this complex region on a broader scope and to give our readers a balanced and credible picture of the reality in this region. This blog will bring you in-depth analysis, as well as our own personal observations about the region that we live in.

Black trailblazers Obama and beauty queen Aynaw to talk about ... Pollard?
Have Israeli leaders co-opted the country's beauty queen to raise the issue of Jonathan Pollard with President Obama because she is Ethiopian? Do they think Obama will reconsider Pollard just because another black person asks him to?
