It is customary for our people to honor fast days, memorial days and festivals by studying commentaries on their origins, the symbols and rituals of their observance, and the ways in which they connect to our own lives.

Thank you, Russian immigrant to Israel, for Nakba Day
Alex Miller will go down in history as the Israeli politician who tried his damnedest to erase the memory of the Nakba - and, in doing so, made the Nakba an indelible part of our lives.
thank you

bad analogy

A better analogy would be that the Americans could (and should) remember that their state was also built on uprooting and killing the indigenous population...

01 0 0Do Palestinians observe Holocaust Remembrance Day?
- By Yonatan
- 15 May 2012

No, and why should they? It was our holocaust, not theirs. The Nakba is a Palestinian catastrophe, brought on by themselves. Let them observe it in Palestine - the West Bank and GAza - and not here in Israel.

The Nakba, like the Jewish holocaust, was brought by expansionist Europeans.

The Germans ALSO stole Jewish homes, lands and businesses, based on a "God given right." All colonials behave the same way.

nationalism

You have an interesting case of narrow nationalisms here, unfortunately so common here in Israel. Only Jews should remember the Holocaust, only Armenians should remember their genocide, etc? Each people to themselves, with their own stories forever theirs and no one elses'. Right? Let me give you my western european take on this: For me the Shoah is not just "part of the eternal suffering of the jews in the galut". It is first of all an eternal reminder of what ugly narrow minded nationalism can lead too. What can happen when you start dividing the world and humanity into "us" and "them".

Arab Muslims forced themselves onto Israel's land, and started calling it their own. Jews took it back. Arab Muslims called this a catastrophe. For Arab Muslims it is. However, not because Jews took the land of Israel back, but because Arab Muslim ideology of the entire World becoming Muslim and therefore Arab came crushing down. Hence, it's an existential catastrophe for them.
