Austrian national team coach Otto Baric is finding his football association less than accommodating with regard to his request to allow his squad a longer training camp so as to prepare for its World Cup qualifier against Israel on October 27.
There are two Austrian league games scheduled for October 23 and the Austrian team is set to arrive here on October 26, just a day before the big game at the National Stadium. This leaves Baric with only two days to prepare before the kickoff.
A final decision on the rescheduling of Austrian league games is due to today.
Baric was due to watch yesterday's league game between Admira Wacker and FC Tirol Innsbruck; and according to local media sources, he was interested in central defender Michael Hatz, formerly of Austria Vienna.
Baric may also invite Rapid Vienna's 19-year-old striker, Roman Walmar, who scored his teams winning goal against Salzburg on Saturday.
The game almost turned into a debacle as combustible material was thrown from the Salzburg stand into the Rapid supporters' enclosure. Although the material ignited, there were no casualties in the incident.
In retaliation, a group of Rapid supporters tried to attack the Salzburg goalkeeper. In the ensuing fracas, Rapid's coach and former German captain, Lothar Matthaeus, was sent off, as was one of his players. Matthaeus said later that he had never experienced such behavior by both fans and players in all his 22 years as a player in the German Bundesliga. Rapid could yet receive a radius ban for the incidents on Saturday.
National team coach Richard Nielsen has invited 12 players to a practice match against the under-21 team. The game is scheduled for tomorrow. Striker Alon Mizrahi, who has still not found a club since his departure from Betar Jerusalem has not been invited to take part.
With both Hapoel and Maccabi Tel Aviv's players busy preparing for their respective UEFA Cup matches this weekend, and with four other players (Haim Revivo, Eyal Berkovic, Idan Tal and Avi Tikva) all playing for their respective clubs abroad, only some of the players taking part tomorrow will be among those who will eventually be chosen for the squad to face Austria.
Invited players: Dudu Awat, Rafi Cohen, Eyal Ben-Ami, Alon Harazi, Arik Benado, Adoram Keisi, Walid Badir, Yossi Benayoun, Yaniv Katan, Najwan Grayeb, Alon Halfon and Ofer Talkar.
